Nominal vs Real

Foundations

WHAT IT IS

Nominal values are in current dollars; real values adjust for inflation to show true purchasing power.

WHY IT MATTERS

Real values let you compare across time. A 5% nominal raise with 4% inflation is only 1% real.

EXAMPLE

A $50,000 salary in 1990 had more buying power than $50,000 today.
