Yield Curve

Financial System

WHAT IT IS

The yield curve plots interest rates on government bonds from short to long maturities.

WHY IT MATTERS

A normal curve slopes up. When it inverts, it has often preceded recessions.

EXAMPLE

A 2-year bond might pay 4% while a 10-year pays 4.5%—that's a normal upward slope.
